Hi everyone,can anyone tell me why ford changed the thermostat on my model?

just bought one,always read cold,bought new thermostat parkers said correct.

fitted it ,water temp just right.then noticed different thermostat in pipe

left well alone ,runs and works fine so why this change??

On all but the very first 2.3 models, the thermostat housing should be empty and an inline thermostat is fitted in the pipework. You will see that the thermostat has three pipes attached, the thermostat contains two valves and diverts flow around the block when in the closed position. If a second thermostat is fitted it the housing, this flow is cut off.

 

AFAIK, the change was made due to problems caused by uneven heating of the block.

 

Most catalogues list the wrong thermostat, even the Ford dealers sometimes struggle with this one. If they offer you the insert type, the dealer catalogue lists the actual thermostat on the page with the radiator pipework. Ford part no. is 1125023, cost is about

Hi sparky thanks for the info but still cannot see

how it matters,first thermo will heat up releasing

hot water to second thermo opening that and system

will carry water as usual will only be a matter of

about 2 minutes delay,will see how it affects temp

change by removing 1st thermo again.

The thermostat in the pipe is not a simple single thermostat, it acts as a diverter. With the external thermostat, coolant flows to the block when the thermostat to the rad is shut - it simply takes the rad out of the circuit rather than shutting the flow off altogether.

HI ,yes I see your point but this will still take the rad out of the circuit

until the engine has reached optimum temperature saving fuel.and still has a release

through internal heater rad .I took the 1st thermostat out ,tried it 10 miles

gauge never moved.Am now going to try golf thermostat in 1st,fitting opens at

77 degrees rather than second one at 88,will release water quicker to 2nd thermostat.

The original configuration was carried over from the old 2 litre engine, and was quickly modified for the 2.3... I don't think they would have gone to this trouble for nothing.

 

What's wrong with fitting the proper 'stat and having done with it? B)

Hi,tried that first just after noting never got warm,made no difference at all ,thats when I fitted

2nd thermo and it cured it.thats why I was wondering why they fitted it differently on this model

No doubt the 'stat in the housing will work, but I'm not sure if it may harm the engine in the long run. Stopping the flow to the front of the block is contrary to the way the cooling system is designed to work.

 

What I meant above is why not fit a new external thermostat, as it's supposed to be fitted? By that, I mean the correct external thermostat from the Ford dealer, not the insert in the thermostat housing - this should be left empty.

 

If you are saying that fitting the correct 'stat did not fix it, perhaps you have another problem. A faulty header tank cap is not uncommon and gives similar symptoms, but with a small amounts of coolant loss.

Hi,rang round loads of dealers and they all said they supply the inner thermo as that is what is listed

so I guess there a few around same as this.Anyway moved the galaxy on today ,told buyer about thermo

and all they said was as long as gauge was normal when running that was fine by them.advised asking a dealer

if any problems.thanks for the input BRY

You can't get the correct thermostat from a motor factor, and most catalogues incorrectly list the insert for all 2.3 models. As for main dealers, both 'stats are listed on eCat, the external stat is listed on the radiator hoses page.

 

Unfortunately, even when they punch in the reg or chassis number, both stats are listed for all 2.3 models. Unless they are familiar with the car, they usually pick the more obvious (but incorrect) one.

Hi sparky,Was a bit worried about selling faulty vehicle but one phone call to America solved it thank goodness,-

the outlet as you know is plastic if fitted with a thermostat the plastic degrades and starts to crumble,sending nasty bits into cooling system also leaks at o ring seal.ford being the omnipetent company it is refused to change this so moved the thermostat away from it.As I made the gasket myself should never leak but have told buyer and will leave it to him.apparently it has no effect on performance or engine stability just nasty coolant bits after a time.thought I would let you know thanks for input BRY.

Ford do seem to have started charging a premium on some fast moving Galaxy parts (probably because many of them are VW sourced- call me an old cynic but it wouldn't surprise me if they don't want to warehouse some of it any more so have an agreement with VW so that when you order a part from Ford it actually comes from a VW warehouse.........) - I bought a replacement alternator to battery junction box cable (a commonly failing part that overheats at the junction box terminal) backalong and the latest level part number had a list price that was a damn sight more expensive that the previous one!

 

Having just said that, of course the 2.3 petrol is a Ford sourced engine so what I said above isn't relevant in that case of a thermostat.... Sometimes I think the manufacturers just figure they can charge a premium for stuff, especially when there isn't an aftermarket alternative and you're stuck with paying whatever the hell the manufacturer decides to charge for it.

theyve always been like this,when i bought my old mk2,it ended up need a new auxhillary booster heater,it was about 200 odd quid more then vw,i said i could walk over the road to vw and buy it cheaper they said i could but they would not gaurntee it as it wasnt supplyied by them,i told them they didnt make it in the 1st place and they had to go to vw to buy it any way.they then told me they had to repackage it into a ford box,WHAT FOR

Having just said that, of course the 2.3 petrol is a Ford sourced engine so what I said above isn't relevant in that case of a thermostat...

 

Ironically, the 2.3 thermostat lump is a VW part and has a VW part number on it. I guess it came from the VW parts bin somewhere along the line, but I'm not sure what from.

 

In reply to xavier, the remote stat comes contained in a sealed housing with 3 pipe outlets, and you have to buy the whole thing.
